1/28/17 EARLY WINTER TOUR BLOG - PART 4
Saturday. 6:31 pm. We just made a slight detour from our route to get a cup of coffee in Asheville, NC. Once again, I am writing from the backseat of the van, (tentatively renamed "The Angel of Death"- thus renamed for two reasons: 1) we thought it makes us sound tougher. Being a band playing sensitive dude rock, we still like to freak out your grandma. 2) you can take the northeast driver out of the northeast, but you can't take the northeast out of the driver- if you catch my drift). We've been going with the philosophy that the backseat is earned by the last driver, which I just made by hauling us some 200 miles of road from Nashville to here. We passed through blue and purple mountains, windy valley roads, and unforgiving truckers as we cut through the landscape at a solid tempo.
Last night was a surprise, which is one of the things I love about playing music. We were originally pitched the idea that it was more of a showcase night, and we wouldn't really be able to stretch out. But the people showed up, they listened, and it was.... a really good time. The band Is starting to cook a little- after the third song or so it felt like we hit our stride. Adam sat in for a few numbers, and we met some new friends. I felt more comfortable telling my story to a crowd of strangers. Maybe you know it, maybe you don't. But it goes a little something like this:
"Last year, I was going through the worst stretch of my life. I was in this two to three year slide where all the structures in my life crumbled to dust. The band broke up, my marriage had failed, my health declined, and my business was in a free fall. So, I looked around me, and realized I moved in the wrong direction for about ten years. All I ever wanted to do was buy a van, play music, and travel. I'm just an ordinary person trying to chase down a dream that I've had for as long as I can remember, to embrace the present, to live my life on my own terms, and to spread this message to other people. My hope is that everyone here finds the way to do the same thing, whatever that may be for you."
